15-year record in trademark applications - What the OBI figures for 2024 show

Interest in registering trademarks in Greece is rising significantly, according to official figures from the Industrial Property Organisation (OBI). As the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Dimitris Chronis, stated, the number of applications in 2024 is approaching 7,000 - the highest level in the last 15 years and a clear continuation of the positive trend of 2023, when 6,449 applications had been filed.

Mr Chronis noted that this increase serves as an indication of a healthier and more dynamic business environment. The trademark, he stressed, is a critical tool for economic development, influencing company strategy, the value of their products and services, their outward orientation and the creation of new jobs. For this reason, the number of filings reflects the country's real economic activity.

The upward trend of recent years is attributed to two main factors: increased business activity and the improved operation of the trademark system. Since 2022, when OBI took over responsibility for maintaining the trademark register, procedures have accelerated dramatically and the quality of services has been significantly strengthened. The easy and affordable national filing procedure appears to attract the majority of interested parties, despite the parallel option of directly obtaining a European trademark.

OBI estimates that these positive results constitute a vote of confidence from the public in the intellectual property system as a reliable means of protecting intangible assets. Looking ahead to 2025, the organisation expects an even greater increase, while continuing its awareness efforts on the importance of trademark registration and the ongoing upgrade of its services.
